Laguna Campground sits at nearly 6,000 feet in the Cleveland National Forest — one of San Diego’s most spectacular high-altitude landscapes, bordering the Big Laguna Mountain Meadows and Little Laguna Lake. This is where Alter Experiences operates its two largest glamping suites: Fox Den and Blue Jay Nest, each accommodating up to 14 guests in a combination of Tentsile tree tents, bell tents, and hammocks.

Laguna Campground — The Setting
Laguna Campground is one of the Cleveland National Forest’s most beautiful sites — forested with old-growth pines and oaks, bordered by the Big Laguna Mountain Meadows and Little Laguna Lake, and set at an elevation that puts you genuinely above the heat and noise of San Diego’s coastal lowlands. At nearly 6,000 feet, mornings here are crisp even in July, and the nights are cold enough for a campfire every single night of the season.
The campground borders one of San Diego County’s most ecologically significant meadow systems. The Laguna Mountain Meadows area is home to the endangered Laguna Skipper butterfly, numerous bird species, and plant communities found nowhere else in the county. If you are a nature photographer, a birder, or simply someone who appreciates extraordinary biodiversity, this location will not disappoint.
Campground Facilities
Open fires are permitted in designated fire pits only. All USFS fire restrictions apply — we cover fire safety protocols in full at every guest orientation.
Hiking, Nature & Activities from Laguna Campground
Laguna Campground is one of the best hiking base camps in San Diego County. The surrounding Cleveland National Forest and Laguna Mountain Recreation Area offer trails ranging from easy meadow walks to strenuous ridge hikes with views stretching to the Pacific and the Anza Borrego Desert.
Trails Near Laguna Campground
- Laguna Meadow Trail — a gentle loop through the Big Laguna Mountain Meadows, ideal for families and wildlife watching
- Desert View Nature Trail — a short interpretive trail with sweeping views of the desert below
- Lightning Ridge Trail — a longer ridge walk with panoramic views in every direction
- Big Laguna Lake — easy walk from the campground to the lake and surrounding meadow habitat
- Pacific Crest Trail access — the PCT passes through the Laguna Mountain area, accessible from multiple trailheads minutes from the campground
Wildlife & Nature
The Big Laguna Mountain Meadows bordering the campground is one of the most biologically significant habitats in San Diego County. The meadow complex supports the endangered Laguna Skipper butterfly, numerous raptor species including eagles and hawks, mule deer, and a diverse assemblage of native plants. Sunrise walks through the meadow are one of the quiet highlights of a Laguna Campground stay.
Educational Programs & Amphitheater
Laguna Campground features an outdoor amphitheater used for educational programs covering the area’s flora, fauna, and natural history. Families with children will find these programs a memorable complement to the outdoor experience — a genuine introduction to the ecology of the Cleveland National Forest rather than a generic nature walk.
Group Events & Event Glamping at Laguna Campground
Laguna Campground is one of San Diego’s most distinctive event venues — a federally managed forest setting at 6,000 feet, with infrastructure that supports gatherings from intimate group weekends to larger organized events. Alter Experiences is the only USFS-permitted glamping and event outfitter operating in this location.
Combined Fox Den + Blue Jay Bookings
Both Laguna Campground glamping suites can be booked together for events of up to 30 guests.
